Jonny Gibson - Owner & Head Tutor

Jonny has been working within the wine and spirits industry for 30 years. It has been an interesting journey from early days in the marketing department at Diageo running Smirnoff and Croft Port through to brand and design projects for Jameson, Chivas Regal and Louis Roederer to buying and importing for Wine Discoveries. His enthusiasm and fascination for wine has increased the more he has travelled to different wine regions.

Jonny holds the WSET Diploma and is an approved WSET Wine Educator qualified to teach up to WSET Level 3. Over the past 10 years he has run many wine tastings for private and corporate clients and charity events ranging from a small groups to 160 people. He has worked as a judge at several wine events, run wine workshops at the Tesco Wine Fair and has recently worked as a brand ambassador for both Moet et Chandon champagne and Ruinart champagne. He set up Sussex Wine School in early 2012.

His style is relaxed and entertaining with as little wine speak as possible. Expect the odd prop from the vineyards and plenty of winemaker anecdotes.

Jonny says,

"At Sussex Wine School we teach people about wine by concentrating on the flavours and aromas of the wines. We focus on the taste profile of each wine explaining the characteristics of the grape variety, the climate, and the winemaking, and show you with maps and photos where they came from and how they are made. We explain why they taste like they do and ask and listen to what you think about the wines. It's all about trial and error through tasting and learning."

The evenings are above all fun & entertaining with a relaxed atmosphere - no previous wine tasting experience is required. The best and most enjoyable way to learn about wine is comparing the tastes of different wines side-by-side.  We take this to another level with our Food and Wine tastings, where we explore the principles of matching food & wine with practical demonstrations of how different food elements combine with differing styles of wine.
