Twice the Price Blind Wine Tasting 4 Week course
"How much should I really be spending to get a decent bottle of wine?" "Why is that wine so much more expensive than the others if they all come from the same place/are made from the same grape?" "Would I really be able to tell the difference if I splash out on a more expensive bottle, or should I just stick to my favourite which I know I like?"
Do any of these questions sound familiar? Well they do to me! Every week I hear questions just like this at Sussex Wine School. People are fascinated, perhaps quite confused, and certainly a little cynical when it comes to understanding the different prices of wine.
This 4 week course will address this issue head on, in the best way we know how - by tasting all of our wine BLIND without knowing the price. Each week we'll pick a popular white and red wine and taste three examples of each. One wine will cost £5, one wine will cost £10 and one will cost at least £20. But here's the killer question- WILL YOU BE ABLE TO TELL THE DIFFERENCE? And equally importantly- will you actually prefer the most expensive one? Some weeks possibly not.
Of course you'll be given plenty of guidance along the way. Every wine is a unique story, so before tasting we'll go through an overview of the wine in question, learning what the main considerations are when it comes to costing in each case. But the real excitement in the evening comes with the blind tasting; the opportunity to set aside prejudices that people might have once they know the cost of the wine, and just trust your own senses!
Like all our 4 week courses, this is the perfect fit for someone who has been to a Sussex Wine School course before- perhaps you've done the 8 Week World of Wine Course and you're wondering what to do next? But even if you're a complete beginner, you'll find the fun and relaxed approach to these evenings mean that all opinions are welcome! So if you're interested in learning a little more about blind tasting, or you're one of those people that puzzles over one bottle should cost £7.50 and another is £15, this is definitely the course for you!
Week 1: Italian Soave and Valpolicella. Two Italian classics which have had their reputations tarnished by over-production of cheap versions; you'll be amazed at the difference when you taste the top stuff!
Week 2: Burgundy Chardonnay and Southern Rhone reds. Two popular options from France; Burgundy is the land of expensive wines, how will they fair at the cheaper price? Cotes du Rhone has a sort of dependable and safe reputation, but what do the top Southern Rhone wines have to offer?
Week 3: New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc and Argentinian Malbec. Need we say more. This session gets under the skin of two of the most popular wine styles on the planet today. Will you be able to tell the difference as we move up the price levels?
Week 4: German Riesling and Australian Shiraz. The much maligned German Riesling: the spectre of Blue Nun and Black Tower rises up to stop many wine drinkers from ever giving it a try. This wine is ripe for a re-examination and we're going to take another look! As German wine was falling out of favour, we all suddenly fell in love with Australia's 'sunshine in a glass' offering in the 1990's, so how is their flagship grape variety holding up in 2016?
